✨When Teaching Becomes a Journey of Self-Growth
Two years ago, I was appointed as a secondary English teacher at Halimah Al-Sadiyyah School in Al Baha. That moment marked a new chapter in my life, as I moved from Makkah to Al Baha to begin an unforgettable journey.
On my very first day at school, I made a quiet promise to myself: to separate my personal struggles—homesickness, emotions, and challenges—from my professional role in the classroom. I chose to show up fully, even on the days I didn’t feel complete.
Over time, I began to see every challenge as an opportunity for growth. I accepted my students as they are, without expectations, and learned to appreciate the unique energy each one brings.
My beloved rascals pushed me forward and shaped my progress, while my adorable troublemakers sometimes tested my patience and reflection. Together, they created a dynamic classroom environment—a beautiful balance of energy and learning.
To me, teaching is a fluid blend of personalities, emotions, and learning styles that complement one another. By “complement,” I mean that a classroom works best when differences are embraced, allowing it to move like a symphony built on respect and individuality.
Chris Biffle once said that the brain hates habituation. Inspired by this idea, I transformed my English classes into a kind of learning game, where students earn “super improvement stars” that engage their minds and motivate them to reach the next level.
Tomorrow marks the final exam for my 3rd-grade students. As I look at them, I feel a deep sense of pride. I hope I was able to expand their knowledge and leave a meaningful mark—not only in their academic journey, but also in their lives.
