Beyond Praise: The impact of our words
Beyond Praise : The impact of our words🗣️
When Praise Helps And Hurts 📌
While it is a commonly held belief that praise is a crucial part of motivation, it can send either a positive or a negative message to others. In other words, every word can tell people how to think about themselves. In this blog, I would like to discuss the hidden messages from some parents and teachers beyond their compliments. But before we go through this topic, let’s divide these messages into two groups: Fixed Mindset and Growth Mindset.
📌 Children’s Perspective on Their Parents’ Messages:
Generally, most children love to be praised for their intelligence and talent because it gives them a boost. However, the moment they hit an obstacle, their confidence level declines substantially. If success means they are talented and geniuses, then failure means they are dumb.
Here is an example of a fixed mindset parent’s message:
Parent: You learned that so quickly. You are so smart!
The child’s reflection: If I do not learn quickly, then I am not smart enough.
Fixed mindset messages focus on two criteria: First, success means less effort. Second, they create a sense of continuous judgment. For example, children feel that their traits are being measured all the time. In other words, if I cannot meet my parent’s expectations, I won’t be smart and successful enough.
Here is an example of growth mindset words:
Parent: You nailed it this time. Are you ready to keep learning and seek new methods next time?
The child’s reflection: I did well this time, and I will always have a lifelong way to build and repair.
A growth mindset encourages them to accept challenges over refusing them, learn from their mistakes over hiding them, seek new strategies over restricting themselves, and keep on learning over quitting.
📌 What Makes a Great Teacher?
Teachers with a fixed mindset usually create an atmosphere of judgment. For instance, they look at their students to decide who is smart and who is dumb. Then, they continue with the smart students and give up on the less capable ones. Actually, these teachers do not believe in improvement, so they do not create it.
On the other hand, teachers with a growth mindset enjoy the process of learning. Thus, they always prefer to set high standards and clarify the means of reaching them for all their students, without making assumptions about their abilities.
For instance, clarifying specific instructions for writing an effective paragraph by using linking words and including the main ideas instead of memorising a model paragraph you chose.
Great teachers embrace their students’ creativity and mistakes and encourage a love of learning.
Throughout this blog, I drew on ideas from Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, one of the most insightful self-improvement books I have read and highly recommend.

Mindset: The New Psychology of Success، وهو من أكثر كتب تطوير الذات التي وجدتها ثراءً وإلهامًا، وأوصي بشدة بقراءته.
